Overview

"Can we have class outside today?"

Happenin' Habitats will answer that question with a hearty "yes!" Join with us and take your students on a wild learning adventure with the National Wildlife Federation's Schoolyard Habitats® Program. You and your students will learn how to create an accessible wildlife habitat site that you can use as an outdoor classroom in your own schoolyard!

These thriving learning environments can be used to study all subjects — science, math, language arts, social studies, and more. Wildlife habitat sites provide the opportunity to teach all students, something that can be challenging in the classroom.

This universally designed course includes activity adaptations for students with hearing, learning, motor, and visual disabilities. You will also find site accessibility guidelines to create a habitat that can be enjoyed by all. Happenin' Habitats is also correlated to National Science Education Standards. Students will learn about:

  • Structure and function in living systems
  • Regulation and behavior
  • Populations and ecosystems
  • Diversity and adaptations of organisms
  • Abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry
  • Nature of science
  • Much more
